A Refreshing Solution to Fatigued-Looking Eyes
Eyelid surgery addresses signs of aging in the upper and/or lower eyelids, including lax, droopy skin, puffy bags and fine lines. To successfully revitalize the eye area, the operation requires the delicate approach of an extremely talented surgeon such as Dr. Mark H. Schwartz. Dr. Schwartz is a highly requested board-certified plastic surgeon in New York City who has helped a multitude of patients benefit from the procedure.
Candidates for Eyelid Surgery
Dr. Schwartz evaluates prospective eyelid surgery patients individually during a consultation. He examines their eyes, noting loose skin, wrinkles and/or puffy under eye bags. He inquires about the candidate’s goals of surgery, and formulates a plan.
Suitable candidates for eyelid surgery have noticeable signs of aging around the eyes, which may be caused by sun damage, stress or the effects of smoking. They should be in good health and free of any eye conditions such as chronic dry eye. Also, prospective candidates should have specific, reasonable goals of surgery and a positive outlook.
Procedural Details
Eyelid surgery is usually performed at Dr. Schwartz’s on-site surgical facility. Sedation is used for optimal patient comfort and safety, and is performed by a board-certified anesthesiologist.
Dr. Schwartz operates on the upper and/or lower eyelids, depending on the needs of the specific patient. If he is treating the upper eyelids, he makes the incisions along the natural crease of the upper eyelid fold. Through the incision, he removes excess fat and skin, and may also reposition existing fat deposits to create a youthful, pleasing contour. Dr. Schwartz tightens the remaining skin over the lid to create a refreshed and rested eye appearance.
If Dr. Schwartz is treating the lower eyelids, he makes the incision just below the lower lash line. He removes excess skin and fat and tightens the eyelid structures. In cases where the primary complaint is puffiness, Dr. Schwartz can make an incision inside the eyelid to treat the area. This is known as the transconjunctival approach. He may also perform laser resurfacing to tighten and smooth the skin around the eyes.
Eyelid surgery focuses specifically on the upper and lower lids. Other concerns in the eye area such as a droopy browline or forehead wrinkles may be addressed at the same time with a brow lift.
Recovering from Eyelid Surgery
Post-operative side effects, such as swelling and bruising, are mild and temporary. Oral pain medication can be taken as prescribed. Lubricating ointment and cold compresses also aid the healing process and minimize symptoms. Patients are encouraged to rest and relax during the initial recovery period, and avoid strenuous activity.
Dr. Schwartz and his medical staff will provide you with comprehensive aftercare instructions and details for follow-up appointments. Sutures are usually removed five days after surgery. During the follow-up visits, he will examine your progress and will advise when you can resume normal activities, exercise and return to work.
The eyes look more awake and youthful almost immediately after surgery, and results continue to improve as post-operative swelling subsides.
